Trump Administration to Issue 50% Snap Benefits in the Coming Month

The US administration announced it would offer reduced relief to millions of SNAP users as the continuing federal closure reached a unprecedented length.

Benefit Cut Information

Amid mounting concern for the approximately 42 million individuals enrolled in the food assistance program, the Department of Agriculture indicated it would use contingency resources to sustain benefits, although at just 50% of the standard amount households usually obtain.

Funding for the assistance formally ran out on Saturday due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th consecutive day with little indication of ending.

Judicial Actions

The announcement came in a court filing after previous refusals to issue urgent funding on purported legal grounds. A court had ruled the government could not withhold program funds because of the shutdown.

After the court order, the administration stated it would be "privileged" to provide necessary funding for the program.

Implementation Difficulties

Authorities suggested that benefits could commence by the coming days, but stressed the need for more clarification from the legal system on how to properly transfer money for SNAP benefits.

  • Some authorities have indicated it will take multiple days or even weeks to distribute funds to low-income families.
  • Crowds have been documented at food banks throughout the United States.
  • In various states, public facility parking lots were transformed into distribution sites.

State Emergency Responses

Various authorities, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced emergency declarations to provide short-term money for support. However, these amounts were projected to be a small portion of the normal federal funding.

The government costs for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion each month throughout the United States.
